1.3 Multicast overview

Last updated: 25 February, 2024

Multicast is a service that helps to alleviate large amounts of simultaneous data traffic from filling up the network unnecessarily.  It allows CPs to configure their network service so that “live” events that everyone wants to see at exactly the same time, only travel once to the network node nearest to the end customers, and then split there to each of the services that are consuming that data.  This is best for live sporting or news events, or video game or smartphone upgrades that will be delivered to large numbers of users simultaneously.

Multicast for GEA is ordered and contracted separately from GEA-FTTP.  Further details and functionality of the Multicast for GEA product are defined and described separately within its product description which is available in the Overlay services section of the Openreach portal product pages, here.
