Openreach to trial Fibre to the Premises in Brownfield sites
updated: 01/10/2009This briefing on FTTP Brownfield is for all Communications Providers.
Openreach will pilot Fibre to the-Premises (FTTP) technology in “brownfield” sites for the first time from March 2010.
Openreach is pleased to announce that two locations have been selected for a first Fibre to the Premises pilot on brownfield sites. The two areas are Bradwell Abbey in Milton Keynes and Highams Park in London. The pilot will see speeds of up to 100Mbit/s delivered to up to 20,000 homes and businesses in each of these areas by March 2010.
The pilot will enhance Openreach’s understanding of the performance of the technology and the economics involved when rolling out fibre directly to premises in areas where copper services are already available.
Openreach’s super-fast fibre access roll-out plans involve a mix of Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and FTTP technologies, with FTTC expected to be the most widely deployed technology. FTTC will deliver downstream speeds of up to 40Mbit/s, potentially rising to more than 60Mbit/s in the future.
These FTTP and FTTC products will offer end users the highest upstream speeds currently available in the UK, at up to 10Mbit/s. These speeds are ideal for consumers or businesses wanting to send large files with rich graphics or upload pictures and videos in a fraction of the time that is possible using products with slower downstream speeds.
For more details on Openreach’s super-fast fibre access plans please visit the Super-fast Fibre Access pages on the Openreach website.
